"Drifting Away" is a song about the struggle to hold onto those moments as time marches forward and how hard it is to do so since as soon as these moments occur, they have already begun to pass. The song was purposely constructed with a constant changing meter to express this as well. The meters changes regularly from 3/4 to 4/4 in the verse and an alternating meter of 3/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 in the chorus, using the metric and rhythmic changes to represent the constant change of time and the struggle to hold onto these passing moments . Finally in the outro there is a slow decrescendo in the vocals and guitar to represent a longing for these moments "Drifting Away" in our past as we move forward in the song.
